Litter Training Your New Kitten
You have a new kitten and everything is so cute and adorable. You have bought everything you need for your kitten from little mouse toys, to balls of yarn, grooming gear, healthy snacks and all of the hygienic equipment. However, for your sanity it is imperative to get your kitten accustomed to using his litter box as soon as possible otherwise your kitten won’t remain so cute and adorable when it leaves a little present next to your bed.
To effectively train your kitten to use the litter box you will have to have patience as it can be a tedious task to achieve your goal. You have to accept that your kitten will make mistakes, and only with perseverance will you have your kitten using the litter box in no time.
First you will need a litter box. More than likely already have one as you are a responsible pet parent. You need to ensure that your litter box is well suited to your kitten. It needs to be shallow enough at some point that your kitten can climb into and out of it without any problems.
Next you will want a litter that will mask the smell of the presents your kitten leaves behind. This is so that the kitten can use its instincts to cover the excrement. There are a whole plethora of options available in the kitten litter aisle so look for a mix that is formulated especially for training your kitten. If you need some help choosing the right cat litter, do not be afraid to ask a store employee for some advice.
Once you have assembled your ingredients you will want to set the cat litter tray in a place that won’t be in your way and is easily reached by your kitten. Leave it in place and don’t move it around the house otherwise you will confuse your kitten and it will go back to leaving presents at the foot of your bed again.
Introduce your kitten to the litter box to get it accustomed to the box. To help your kitten associate the box with where it needs to do its business, you should place your kitten in the box after it eats. Keep on doing this until the connection is made.
The key here is perseverance. You will need to keep moving your kitten to the box until it makes the connection. A cat will not use a dirty litter box so make sure that you regularly empty it so that your cat can continue be healthy and do his business as required without leaving your presents everywhere instead.
